How to determine the outer diameter, width and thickness of diamond grinding stones

For diamond grinding wheels or CBN grinding wheels, the outer diameter of the grinding wheel depends on grinding machine in most cases. Therefore, we generally use the recommended size from the machine manufacturer, but if we can make or modify the machine by ourselves, or if the outer diameter can be set freely, it will be difficult to decide which size to use.

In general, a diamond wheel wheel with an outer diameter of D300 mm has a higher grinding ratio and a longer using life than a diamond grinding wheel with an outer diameter of D100 mm. Of course, the price of bigger diamond grinding wheel will be higher, and in some cases, the size is tripled, but the price will not be simply tripled. However, if you closely calculate the grinding ratio and cost, it may be advantageous in terms of money. The grinding ratio here is the value obtained by dividing the grinding amount by the amount of wear of the grind wheel, for example, the value indicating how much workpiece can be ground and polished with 1 cc of the diamond layer of the grinding wheel.

In the respect of grinding ratio, if other factors are the same, the larger the outer diameter, the higher grinding efficiency. In addition, the wider and thicker the abrasive layer, the higher the grinding ratio. However, if the outer diameter is increased unnecessarily, grinding may not be successful.

When it is better to increase the outer diameter of the grinding wheel:
The grinding wheel wears quickly, the shape collapses quickly, and accuracy is not achieved.
Insufficient peripheral speed
Large grinding area and large workpiece dimensions

When it is better to make it smaller:
The motor output and torque of the grinding machine are insufficient.
The grinding wheel is hard, it does not cut, and it is not sharp.
Large runout and dimensional accuracy cannot be obtained

When it is better to increase the thickness and width of the abrasive layer:
I want to improve the surface roughness
When the grinding wheel is heavily worn
I want to improve the efficiency of grinding (I want to set a large traverse, cross feed, etc.)

When it is better to reduce the thickness and width of the abrasive layer:
Burnt on the workpiece or grinding wheel
Grinding machine spindle powder and torque are not sufficient
I want to make a deep cut
When using dry or where grinding fluid cannot be used
